Week 1 Question

Please respond to the following question using RAD format and correct spelling and grammar. Use information from the book to support your thinking. Type your response in Google Docs first, then post it to the site. This way you won't lose your work, and if you need to make corrections you can.

Question 1:

Kenny is teased because he reads well for a student of his age. Do you think he would be teased in the same way if he was very talented at baseball or basketball? Use information from the book to support your thinking.

  1. Q1: Kenny is teased because he is very smart. I think if Kenny was really good at Baseball or Basketball he wouldn't get teased. I think this because many people play those sports so they would be looking up to him because he is so good. That is why I think Kenny would not get teased.

    1. I like how you say the boys will be looking up to him.

  2. Kenny is a boy who reads very well. He had to read Langston Hughes in front of his older brother, horrible right? If he was good at a “boy” sport he would probably not be teased because all the other boys would rely on him to teach them to do better. But he might get teased because he may miss a shot at the goal, or they might remember that he reads a book upside-down to help him slow down. Byron would probably not tease him because in the book it said that byron was proud of Kenny. So if he was good at a “boy” sport he might get teased or not get teased.

    1. Julia I really liked your use of your personality when you say "boy" sports. I really forgot to look at your name and I was still able to figure out it was you. I really agree that he would not get teased if he was good a a sport. Poor kid !!!

  3. If Kenny was talented at basketball or baseball I think he wouldn't be teased the same because when your smart in school people think you're better then them so they bring you down and in the book it was talking about how when there’s a new kid everyone checks to see if they like them or don't and when you play sports you're usually considered “cool” and when people check to see if what they think about you, you would be considered “cool”.

    1. Great thinking and I totally agree with the way you say cool and your personality of it. Awesome vocabulary with considered, talented, and usually. Props to Morgan on this one!!!

  4. If Kenny was good at sports, he wouldn't get teased, because a lot of people like sports and it would be popular. Since reading is not what a lot of people like or do, it is not as popular to other people (which is actually good for someone who doesn't have a lot of money). When he was on the bus, someone else showed interest for reading, which I thought kind of boosted him up on he thought what other people thought about reading. He's probably one of the best people in the whole entire school in reading, unlike other people who aren't. In the text it says "I want you to carefully note how advanced this second grade student is, and I particularly want you to be aware of the effect his skills have upon you." As you can see, he put kind of a reading twist on a teacher, unlike sports minded people and people would probably tease him.So that's why he wouldn't be teased because of reading.

  5. I agree with everyone that Kenny would not have been teased if he excelled in sports rather than reading. Our society really values athletes. I think we all can think of examples of that in our neighborhoods and even around Franklin. I found it interesting, however, that Kenny mentions a group of boys who are older and twice as strong than everyone else because they had "flunked some grade two or three times." Unfortunately for Kenny those same boys are in the 5th grade class where he was asked to read. They tease Kenny about being a good reader but I'm willing to guess that they are poor readers or can't read at all. Perhaps they are great at basketball but I still feel sorry for those boys. As much as they are making Kenny's life miserable in elementary school, it's nothing compared to how difficult the rest of their lives will likely be with low reading and writing skills.

    1. Good thinking, when someone "flunks a grade or two" they probably was not good at something they where supposed to be, so Byron and Buphead were probably not good at reading, and so that is also why Kenny thought Byron was proud of him.

    2. Mrs. Christian I like your thinking when you said that "if Kenny was good at basketball he would not get picked on because he was athletic" (I said what you said in my own words :)

    5. I agree with you because our society does really value athletes. Sometimes I think that we forget about other things in life then what they really know. Like we pay so much attention to the sports we forget about what really means a lot to us. Sometimes we just need to slow down.

  6. I think if Kenny had the same talent as reading in baseball or basketball he would not get teased because kids at Clark think that reading means you are a nerd. But kids do think that if you are good at that type of stuff you are so much cooler than if you are a really good reader.I am not saying ALL kids think that i am only saying that SOME of the kids think that.

    1. I agree with you because at Clark people do think your "different" and not even just at Clark even in real life.

    3. I agree with everyone who thinks that Kenny would not get teased if he was a good athelete. But I was wondering if maybe Kenny gets teased not only because he is a good reader but also because he had a lazy eye. I think people and kids in general get uncomfortable around people who are different from them. Either these kids get ignored or they get teased. Either way it hurts!
